The Royalwood Phase II housing development was the first development in Winnipeg to utilize a naturalized stormwater pond design.

The ponds in Royalwood have since become the standard for naturalized stormwater retention pond design and are the preferred system for stormwater management by the City of Winnipeg.

Royalwood contains a large 3.64 ha stormwater pond and a smaller 2.43 ha pond, constructed early in 2003. At Royalwood NPS was responsible for designing the naturalized wetlands, installing wetland plant material, pond commissioning, soil treatment, native grass seeding on the buffer strips, weed control, erosion control, goose deterrence, and post-establishment maintenance. Post-establishment maintenance to date has consisted of a prescribed burn management on the buffer strip of the Royalwood ponds and on a series of native grass public reserve areas. This prescribed burn was conducted in 2012.
