Nicholson is a Wetland/Remediation Scientist at Native Plant Solutions. Nicholson holds a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Manitoba specializing in remediation of contaminated lands and waters using phytoremediation. Nicholson is the project lead for treatment wetland projects for municipal wastewater treatment. Nicholson is involved at all stages of treatment wetland project implementation from conceptual design to start-up and commissioning. His understanding of the environmental fate of constituents and scientific oversight to NPS projects ensures that all environmental and regulatory targets are met throughout the life cycle of NPS projects from project feasibility through to wetland design.
Nicholson’s scientific research was instrumental in a first-in-Canada project to remediate a former sewage lagoon in Niverville, Manitoba using wetland- and upland-based phytoremediation approaches. This successful project won Manitoba’s Excellence in Sustainability Award in 2014 and the Canadian National Association of Municipality Administrators Environmental Award in 2019. Nicholson has authored peer-reviewed publications on phytoremediation in scientific journals such as the Journal of Environmental Quality, Water, Air, & Soil Pollution, International Journal of Phytoremediation, and Soil Science Society of America.
